Sue Pember, a former senior government official, acts as HOLEX Director of Policy and External Relations.
Sue has extensive experience of teaching and leading adult education services and has worked in colleges, local education authorities and government.
As the former lead Director for Adult and Further Education in the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) she gained extensive experience of working with ministers and departmental board members. She led and orchestrated several national policies that have widened participation in adult education, including being the architect and leader of the Skills for Life (English and maths) Strategy.
She was the Principal of a very successful further education and adult education college for 10 years, including managing the prison education contract for the South East and, before that, led the post 16 and adult education service in the Enfield Local Authority.
Sue trained as a teacher in Wales, taught in colleges in east and north London and completed a Doctorate in Business Administration as a mature student. So she has first-hand experience of what it is like teach in diverse environments and what it is like to go back to formal learning as an adult.
Sue’s service to education was acknowledged in 2000 when she received an OBE for services to education and, in 2003, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Kent for her work in increasing the number of adults participating in Higher Education in Kent.
